Lauren Gifford critical geographer exploring the intersections of global climate change policy, conservation, markets and justice.

Lauren’s work draws on political ecology and science and technology studies (STS) to ask how, and by whom, climate and conservation policies are enacted. Recently she’s been studying the use of cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology to verify carbon offsets. She also teaches courses on human-environment relationships at CU’s Department of Geography.

Lauren holds a PhD in Geography from University of Colorado, Boulder, an MA in Environmental Studies from Dartmouth College, a BA in Communications from American University, and completed coursework in greenhouse gas and forest carbon accounting from the Greenhouse Gas Management Institute (GGMI). She’s conducted mixed methods field research in the Peruvian Amazon, on Cuban organic farms, throughout Maine's forests, at United Nations' UNFCCC negotiations, and at countless civil society meetings around the world.
