Myanna Lahsen (PhD, Anthropology, Rice University) is Associate Researcher in the Earth System Science Center at the Brazilian Institute for Space Research (INPE). Prior to that, she was Social Science Officer in the IGBP in Brazil, and Research Scientist at the University of Colorado’s Center for Science and Technology Policy Research, USA. In addition to numerous, large research grants from the U.S. NSF, she has received fellowship awards under the Jacob K. Javits and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency “STAR” fellowship programs, and held postdoctoral positions in the Advanced Study Program at the U.S. National Center for Atmospheric Research and Harvard University’s J. F. Kennedy School of Government.

Lahsen's research on sustainability and the human dimensions of global environmental change focuses on environmental- and science policy and politics in USA and Brazil, and attends centrally to the role of culture and the media. Her work has been cited and discussed in top newspapers and weblogs in the US and Brazil. It includes, among other things, cultural analysis of US climate politics, the politics of Brazilian science and decision-making related to climate change and deforestation, and the (geo)politics of international science in the context of global environmental change.

Lahsen is also active in science planning and capacity building efforts for less developed countries through her research and engagements at the Brazilian Institute for Space Research and with the global environmental change programmes and the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research, and she is among the dozen or so Young Career Scientists selected by ICSU in 2009 worldwide for their promise as key players in global change science in coming decades.

Past guest editor of the IGBP Global Change Newsletter and Anthropology News, Lahsen is currently Executive Editor (2008-2011) for the subject area “The Social Status of Climate Change Knowledge” in Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews: Climate Change, a forthcoming journal co-sponsored by the UK Royal Societies of Geography and Meteorology.
