(1925-1995, with selected pre-1925 storms additionally)
The location indicates the primary state (or portion of a state) that was affected by the storm, the cateogory indicates the highest intensity of the storm to affect the continental US. Damage column gives the dollar amount in millions of actual continental US damage. Storms that made two completely separate landfalls are noted twice in this listing. 1995 population given in thousands of people. The population change is the 1995 population divided by the population at the time that the storm hit. (For example, for the 1926 Southeast Florida hurricane, the population was 117,000 at that time. In 1995, it was around 3,486,000 - for an increase by a factor of 29.79.) For storms of "0" damage, the 1995 population of the region is given either as (1) < 250,000, (2) 250,000-1,000,000, or (3) > 1,000,000.
Normalized Damage =
Original Damage * GNP Inflation Index * FRTW Index * Coastal County Population Change
(Have also included the hurricanes that did at least $5 million in damages before 1925 for comparison in a top thirty listing of 1900-1995.)
Tropical cyclones that caused significant rainfall-induced flooding inland well away from the coastal counties at landfall (i.e. at least one fourth of the storm's total damage and at least $250 million in 1995 inflation normalized flood damage) are normalized by the population changes in the affected states, instead of the coastal counties where landfall occurred. The tropical cyclones that fit into this type of normalization are the 1916 hurricane, Diane (1955), Doria (1971), Agnes (1972), Eloise (1975) and Alberto (1994).
