Federal Agencies

In FY 2000, the federal government has budgeted about $78 billion for research and development (R&D). About 49% of that total is for defense-related R&D. The remainder (51%) goes to non-defense R&D. Almost all of the non-defense R&D is conducted by six agencies: Health and Human Services (HHS), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Department of Energy (DOE), National Science Foundation (NSF), Department of Agriculture (DOA), and Department of Commerce (DOC). The following table lists the FY 1999 estimates and the FY 2000 budget for R&D (Source: AAAS Report XXIV FY 2000, Table I-1). Agencies with less than $100 million are not listed.
