Tips on Using the Prediction Center Web Site

Borrowed from NSF and nces.ed.gov web sites... we will need to draft our own version.

This section aims to help you minimize problems when viewing our site by explaining how to optimally view our site, demystifying.pdf file formats, and providing links to some useful downloads, tools, and resources.

Appearance

There are a number of things that you can do to optimize the look of predictioncenter.org on your computer. We recommend browsing with either:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0
  • Netscape Navigator 4.0

Of course, using versions 3.x of either of these browsers or Netscape Communicator 4.6 and Internet Explorer 5.0 will also work. These browsers can all be downloaded at no cost. We've designed our pages to take advantage of the latest browser features, including:

  • Style Sheets
  • Javascript
  • Java

but we also make sure that our pages can be viewed by older browsers.

If you're not using Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer, you will also get a good view of nces.ed.gov by using a browser that supports tables, forms, and images.

The Prediction Center makes every effort possible to develop for our audience's varying graphics resolutions. While we currently develop most of our pages for 800 x 600 resolution, we try to develop for both 640 x 480 and 800 x 600 resolutions by using a hybrid of the two resolutions, 640 x 600. By using this type of resolution, we can be sure that everyone can enjoy horizontal-free scrolling when viewing our pages. Of course our pages can also be viewed in 1024 x 768 resolution.

As mentioned, although we try to accommodate all screen resolutions some of our data tables are just too large to fit on one screen in a 640 x 480 screen resolution. When this occurs we recommend changing your screen resolution to 800 x 600. This is easily done on your computer (PC's) by going to your "control panel" and selecting "display". Within display select "settings" and choose the screen resolution you would like.

Navigation

Many pages on the the Prediction Center site contain a standard menubar at the top of each section for easy navigation. Navigate through the site using the quick navigation link located in the drop down menu.

File Formats

Some documents on the Prediction Center Web site are in Portable Document Format .pdf). These cross-platform documents allow users to view publications as they were originally formatted regardless of the platform, software, or configurations they are using to access the Internet..pdf files must be viewed using the Acrobat Reader, which can be downloaded free from Adobe. For best results, make sure you are using Acrobat Reader version 3.0 or later
