Kerr on Hurricanes and Climate Change

Posted to Author: Pielke Jr., R. | Climate Change

In Science this week, Richard Kerr has the best summary I've seen of recent scientific studies of hurricanes and climate. The occasion for Kerr's article is a study by Webster et al. on trends in strom frequencies and intensities. Here is the summary of Kerr's article, "Mounting evidence suggests that tropical cyclones around the world are intensifying, perhaps driven by greenhouse warming, but humans still have themselves to blame for rising damage." These articles are freely available here.

Do you consider this (http://techcentralstation.com/091605F.html) article to be basically incorrect? (It basically shows that Webster el al picked their interval to start at the bottom of the recent Cat 4/5 frequency cycle.) The fact that Webster et al did not even bother to visit the NHC web site to see how their uptrend fit into the historical pattern is hardly forgivable. If such an omission in a comparable context were made by an energy company funded researcher I am sure he would be denounced. Instead Webster et al are praised.

A rather two edged headline from Kerr, for if humans are responsible for global warming, what else is to blame?
