September 04, 2006BA on AdaptationPosted to Author: Pielke Jr., R. | Climate Change Here is an interesting news story from the BBC on a forthcoming speech today by Frances Cairncross, head of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, which will emphasize the need for increased attention to adaptation to climate change. Posted on September 4, 2006 05:46 AMCommentsInteresting little piece of propaganda on their link to the right side called "Climate Change in Depth" Posted by: Steve Hemphill Interesting little piece of propaganda on the right side called Climate change - in Depth." Going to the animated guide just below, then clicking on the "Carbon Cycle" tab one gets to a little budget image called "Major Carbon Stores and Transfers." Apparently they don't think that CO2 outgasses from the ocean near the equator and sinks back near the poles (Commonly known as the "Warm Coke Effect"). Is this what Evaporation and Precipitation are supposed to mean? Is not the water surface transparent to CO2 molecules? How well would that 90 vs. 92 be known? Must be a typo on the carbon store vs. carbon transfer units... Posted by: Steve Hemphill Just to put this in context. She's not recommending abandoning emissions reductions. Just emphasizing that we're going to need adaptation as well - something that's happening in the UK a lot already. One of the things that Kyoto does is spur countries to start thinking about adaptation. (or perhaps, recognizing the need for adaptation is a spur for emissions reduction and joining Kyoto). It's interesting to me that the world seems to divide into two - those nations which are adapting and mitigating (i.e. kyoto signatories) and those nations which are not. http://www.the-ba.net/the-ba/Events/NSEW/NSEWNews/_ClickfortheClimate.htm ‘Climate change is already happening and we must take immediate action to reduce our energy consumption if we are to stop potential catastrophe,’ says Frances Cairncross, President of the BA and Chair of ESRC. ‘People don’t always realise that even the smallest of actions can make a difference. Just as “pennies make pounds”, so switching off your TV at the button instead of leaving it on standby, or walking to school instead of getting a lift, could help save thousands of tonnes of carbon dioxide if everyone took similar steps.’ Posted by: Tom Rees Cairncross has some smart things to say: http://comment.independent.co.uk/commentators/article1362663.ece Posted by: Roger Pielke, Jr. Cairncross and the BA seem to ignore any other factors in "climate change" (sic). They mean AGW?. Climate always changes. Their usage indicates either their intentional misrepresentation or their fallibility to dogma. Ghg's are not the only cause of climate change nor of even just AGW. This is surely the antithesis of effective mitigation; e.g. developed countries supplying scrubbers to third world dirty coal powered plants or enhancement of water supplies therein to lessen soil salination and subsequent wasting of arable lands is beyond their paradigm. "Adaptation" could include developed world government programs such as these which would be less of a drag on quality of life for all.
