Like in many places around the world decision makers in eastern Germany are seeking to reach a future state where seemingly conflicting outcomes related to the economy and the environment are simultaneously realized. The management of ignorance is an important but often overlooked consideration in decision making that the concept of "post-normal science" places into our focus of attention. | | KEYWORDS : | decision making; energy policy; Germany; ignorance; post-normal science; uncertainty | | AREA : | Environmental Sciences & Ecology | | FIRST_AUTHOR_EMAIL : | pielke@colorado.edu | | PUBLICATION : | NATURE + CULTURE | | PLACE : | NEW YORK | | LANGUAGE : | English | | SERIAL : | 54507 | | PAGES : | 196-212 | | ONLINE_PUBLICATION : | no | | VERSION : | 1 | | FIRST_AUTHOR_ADDRESS : | Pielke, RA (reprint author), Univ Colorado, CIRES Ctr Sci & Technol Policy Res, 1333 Grandview Ave,UCB 488, Boulder, CO 80309 USA. | | AUTHOR_OTHER_FORM : | Pielke, Roger A., Jr. | | REFERENCES_NUM : | 17 | | REFERENCE : | Associated Press, 2007, ASS PRESS 1101; Chestney Nina, 2011, REUTERS 0624; Cole Deborah, 2011, ASS FRANCE PRES 0530; Dawson Chester, 2011, WALL STREET J; FUNTOWICZ SO, 1994, ENVIRON TOXICOL CHEM, V13, P1881, DOI 10.1897/1552-8618(1994)13[1881:UCAPS]2.0.CO;2; Funtowicz SO, 1993, FUTURES, V25, P735; Gross Matthias, 2010, IGNORANCE SURPRISE S; Kay John, 2010, OBLIQUITY WHY OUR GO; Knight F., 1921, RISK UNCERTAINTY PRO; Kuhlicke Christian, 2009, CLIMATE POLICY INTEG; Nelles Roland, 2011, SPIEGEL; Pahle M, 2010, ENERG POLICY, V38, P3431, DOI 10.1016/j.enpol.2010.02.017; Pielke Roger A, 2010, CLIMATE FIX WHAT SCI; Ravetz J, 2004, FUTURES, V36, P347, DOI 10.1016/S0016-3287(03)00160-5; FUNTOWICZ SO, 1992, SOCIAL THEORIES OF RISK, P251; Rayner S, 2012, ECON SOC, V41, P107, DOI 10.1080/03085147.2011.637335; Taleb N.
