Graduate Student Jessica Weinkle Blogs about Catastrophe Models

The Short Run blogWriting at her blog, The Short Run, grad student Jessica Weinkle looks at recent catastrophe model filings in the state of Florida: In America's deep south, a region not so far away, hides a new foe threatening otherwise intelligent people's ability to decide. The Louisiana Insurance Commissioner, Jim Donelone, has rung the alarm putting homeowners on alert of "The looming threat of the new cat model, RMS 11". This is the newest addition in the catastrophe model rogue gallery challenging the gallant efforts of state insurance regulating offices. The kryptonite in their coding is the incredible capacity to produce scientifically supported uncertainty thereby weakening the ability to control rates by politically hopeful insurance commissioners everywhere. A past episode between dueling regulating powers and risk predicting machinery demonstrated the societal cost inflicted by these dastardly foes creating uncertainty whenever plugged into a wall. In 2006, RMS rolled out an arbitrary change to their trusty hurricane catastrophe model in RiskLink 6.0, costing Florida homeowners $82 billion. Stay tuned to state regulating offices for the latest updates on the battle between man and machine. Read more ...

Center's SPARC project releases new handbook for Science Policy Decision Makers: Usable Science: A Handbook for Science Policy Decision Makers

In 2010, the United States’ government will spend over $150 billion on research and development. What gets done with that enormous sum has important implications for the wide variety of problems facing our society. Decisions on challenges like national defense, environmental change, rapid urbanization and public health rely on scientific knowledge to inform them. Given the complexity and the significance of such challenges, how can science funders effectively orient a vast research enterprise to make real progress toward desired social goals? News Media Coverage on Climate Change Project

This figure tracks newspaper coverage of climate change or global warming in 50 newspapers across 20 countries and 6 continents. Max Boykoff and Maria Mansfield first assembled this figure while conducting research at the University of Oxford, Environmental Change Institute. They continue to update this figure on a monthly basis as a resource for journalists, researchers, and others who may be interested in tracking these trends. The chart contains data up to approximately six weeks from the present time, due to the timings of when some newspapers' articles are made available through search engines. Read more on this project.

New Western Water Assessment-funded project

The Center now has a new Western Water Assessment-funded project, "A Drought Impact and Vulnerability Indicator Suite". This project will create a set of indicators for assessing the impacts of drought across different sectors (urban, agricultural, water, recreation), with the goal of developing both research-quality time series that can be normalized and analyzed for trends, and applied indicators that can help managers assess impacts and changing vulnerabilities. The search for and collection of indicators goes back a long way in impacts research, so there is a track record to build on. However, a lack of continuity, and changes in baselines, vulnerabilities, and monitoring programs, have made it difficult to develop indicators useful for inter-comparison. The project will canvass existing indicators and determine the appropriate time scales and geographical frameworks for measuring drought impacts and vulnerability, with an initial focus on the Interior West. Indicators data will be served on the Center and Western Water Assessment websites. Contact: Bill Travis.
