 Phaedra C. Pezzullo (PhD,  University of North Carolina Chapel Hill) is an associate professor in the Department of Communication in the College of Media, Communication, & Information at the University of Colorado Boulder, USA. She is an internationally known environmental scholar with interdisciplinary expertise in the humanities and sciences, focusing on environmental communication, environmental justice, climate communication, social movements, qualitative methods, and public advocacy. Pezzullo authored the award-winning Toxic Tourism: Rhetorics of Travel, Pollution, and Environmental Justice (University of Alabama Press, 2007), which examines how communities use noncommercial tours to raise awareness about the impacts of toxic pollution and social injustice. She also has coauthored and/or edited five additional books, including two editions of Environmental Communication and the Public Sphere, 5th Ed. (Sage,  2018), coauthored with Robert Cox, three-time president of the Sierra Club. She has published in and currently serves on the editorial boards of the following journals: Communication and Critical/Cultural StudiesCommunication MonographsCultural Studies, Environmental Communication, Journal of Environmental Media, and Quarterly Journal of Speech. Among other research on a just transition, climate, and food, she currently is co-editing a book on environmental communication in China (to be published in English and Chinese) and a new University of California book series on Environmental Communication, Power, and Culture.

Pezzullo serves as a founding member of the Just Transition Collaborative, which engages in community partnerships, projects, and policy research to advance environmental justice in the transition to a sustainable economy. In 2018, she also became a co-director of Inside the Greenhouse, which fosters creative climate communication for decision-makers, youth & frontline communities. Pezzullo has consulted and volunteered with many civic organizations, including the American Bar Association, the Sierra Club, and city planning departments. She attended COP21 in Paris as part of the International Environmental Communication Association’s Climate Negotiations Working Group. She has been an invited lecturer throughout the US and internationally, including the Grand Amphithéâtre de la Sorbonne, Université de Paris-Sorbonne in Paris, France, Fudan University in Shanghai, China, and at the Communication University of China in Beijing.
